  15. First Collaboration Will Combine Newton Technology With Siemens and
  16. ROLM Telephony

  18. CUPERTINO, California--March 11, 1993--Apple Computer, Inc. and
  19. Siemens Private Communication Systems Group today announced their
  20. plans to combine certain Apple technologies with Siemens and ROLM
  21. telephony capabilities.  The areas of cooperation are intended to
  22. include: equipping business and consumer telephones with Apple's
  23. Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) technology; wireless technology;
  24. integrated voice-data solutions for call centers; and personal
  25. productivity solutions.
  26.     Siemens anticipates that the first result of the Apple-Siemens
  27. collaboration will be NotePhone, from Siemens and ROLM.  This new
  28. technology is planned to be demonstrated for the first time,
  29. publicly, at the CeBIT Fair in Hanover, Germany on March 25.  The
  30. NotePhone project will combine Siemens and ROLM telephony and Apple's
  31. Newton technology to provide access to telephone and fax features.
  32. By incorporating Siemens telephony capabilities and Newton
  33. technology, the companies anticipate that users will be able to both
  34. carry out telephone transactions easily and spontaneously, and access
  35. messaging and information services.  Siemens and ROLM are planning to
  36. provide NotePhones for standard (analog) telephone lines commonly
  37. found in homes and in hotels, as well as for digital business
  38. communications systems from Siemens and ROLM for enhanced
  39. functionality and business productivity.

  42. expertise and market presence that will complement our existing
  43. technologies and marketing efforts worldwide," said Michael Spindler,
  44. president and chief operating officer of Apple.  "Siemens and ROLM's
  45. advanced telecommunications technology combined with Apple's ability
  46. to make sophisticated computer technology useful and accessible makes
  47. perfect sense for this cooperative venture."
